These Tequila Sunrise Jello Shots are a fun and delicious way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
For as long as I can remember, Cinco de Mayo has been a fun holiday, however, there are misconceptions about the day.
Here’s some info:
*Many people outside Mexico mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence, which was declared on September 16, more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867).
A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States. – History.com
Since tequila is the drink of choice in Mexico, what better way to celebrate this holiday than with a tequila sunrise- or rather- a jello shot version of the famous drink?
Like the drink, these Tequila Sunrise Jello Shots have a layer of grenadine {pomegranate} and a layer of orange.

1 hr, 40 Total Time
Yields 10-15
Ingredients
- 8-oz pomegranate juice (I used Pom brand)
- 1/3 C sugar
- 1/2 C cold water
- 1 packet plain gelatin
- 15-20 plastic condiment cups with lids {if using tall shot glasses, spray with non-stick cooking spray}
- 1 small box orange flavored gelatin
- 1 C hot water
- 1 C tequila
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine the pomegranate juice and the sugar over med-high heat;mix well
- Bring to a boil and cook until slightly thickened, about 5 min {yields 1 C, but you will only use 1/2 C for one batch of the shots}
- Put 1/2 C cold water in a small bowl; sprinkle plain gelatin packet over water and let set until dissolved
- Pour 1/2 C warm grenadine in bowl, stir well
- Fill cups with a layer of the gelatin mixture and put in refrigerator to set, about 30-45 mins
- Prepare according to package directions, substituting the cold cup of water for one cup of tequila- let gelatin cool a bit before adding tequila, so as not to 'cook off' the alcohol
- Layer the orange gelatin on top of the grenadine layer and return to refrigerator to set, about 1 hour
- Makes about 10-15 shots, depending on how full you fill them
Notes
If you don't like your shots quite as strong, you can use 1 1/4 C hot water and 3/4 C tequila when making the orange gelatin
