I thought, sleeping in! PJ’s all day! Computer time! Reading! Shopping! Morning TV shows!
That lasted all of… NOT.
Reality hit. Getting the kids up! Making school lunches! Laundry! Grocery shopping! Dentist/orthodontist appointments! Dr. appointments! Dishes, bathrooms, dusting! OK, you get the point. All of a sudden I was the go-to girl {or in my case, the go-to mom/wife}. All that free time I thought I was going to have seemed to slip away before I could grasp it.
Well, I did manage to take hold of a little of it.
I had mentioned to a friend of mine, Jen C., that I was leaving my job and that I really wanted to learn to sew. And just like that she offered to teach me. I thought, sure, bet that’ll never happen. Boy was I ever wrong!
A few weeks later, there we were, sitting at her kitchen table in front of our sewing machines. And I was actually sewing! Oh, I had learned a bit in Jr. High, and a few years before, when I got my machine, my Mom showed me some stuff. But that was about it. I vaguely remembered learning to thread the machine, but knew it would all come back to me. And it did!
This is the very first thing I made. An awesome tote bag that I still use to cart around my sewing stuff. And it was sew easy!
We ate, we drank, we sewed, we shared stories, we laughed, we cried.
It. Was. Awesome.
Jen and I decided that this much fun really should be had on a weekly basis.
And so, ‘Stitch n’ Bitch’ was born.
Soon, other ladies we knew heard about this little ‘event’ of ours and wanted to have fun, too. Who were we to say no?
Sometimes we would have two or three extra ladies and sometimes it would just be us.
That was two years ago. Since then I have gotten better at sewing. I’ve made tons of purses and totes, I made a drawstring pouch for my husband and I even made a dress from a pattern with my sister this summer!
I don’t get the chance to go to Jen’s as often anymore, but it makes it more special that way, don’t you think?
What memories do you have of your first time sewing? Do you have any sewing traditions with any of your friends or family?
Oh, I’m sorry, were you expecting a tutorial? You’ll have to wait until next time for that…
