Last week I shared with you about how I started sewing with my friend, Jen. I also shared a photo of the tote I learned to make.
Well, this week I want to show you just how easy it is to make.
Supplies:
1 Table runner
1 1/2″ Webbing (for the strap)
7/8″ Coordinating ribbon
Coordinating thread
Straight pins
Scissors
Measure your runner. {Yes, even if it says the dimensions on the packaging you still need to do this. Mine was actually an inch shorter then it claimed to be!} Cut your runner into thirds lengthwise.
Place the second piece under the first piece and the third piece on TOP of the second piece. This way you will have only finished edges showing. {Don’t worry about the sides, these will not show} Be sure to overlap the pieces 3 inches. Pin.
Now sew the pieces together, using a zig zag stitch. Be sure to catch both pieces of fabric so that the seam lies flat.
This is what it should look like when you’re done.
Next, measure the length and x’s by 2. Take that number and add 44 {22 inches for each strap x’s 2 straps} You can adjust this number if you want the straps longer or shorter, but I find that 22in for each strap is just right.
Cut the strap {webbing}. Example using 40in for length- 40×2+44=124. In this example your strap would need to be 124in long. Cut a piece of ribbon the same length. Sew the ribbon onto the strap. I don’t usually pin my ribbon on before sewing, I find it easier to ‘eye-ball’ it. Of course, you should pin it if this is not comfortable for you.
This is what your strap should look like. I used the zig zag stitch because I like the way it looks. You could also use a straight stitch, just so long as the edge of the ribbon is secure.
To attach the strap, measure to find the middle of the length of the material. Place one end of the strap at this point, but seven inches in from the edge.
Adjust the strap so that you have 22 inches of strap ‘hanging’ off each end of the material. Pin in place.
Sew where the two ends of the strap meet, using the zig zag stitch to ensure they are secure.
To sew the strap on, begin at the top of one end of the material and straight stitch down one side and then the other.
This is how it should look.
Now it’s time to put this baby together! Fold the bag in half lengthwise, right sides together. The most important thing here is to match up the top. Pin the sides together. Sew the sides using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Trim any excess, leaving 1/4 inch. Use zig zag stitch on the edges to give the sides a ‘finished’ look.
With the bag still inside-out, bring the corners together.
Measure 3 inches from the corner and sew a straight stitch. Trim the excess leaving a 1/4 inch, use zig zag stitch to once again for a ‘finished’ look. Do this to both corners of the bag.
Turn your bag inside-out and you are ready to go!
