Love your Keurig 2.0 but hate that you can no longer use your own coffee and a reusable coffee filter in it? Get around it with this Keurig 2.0 hack – it works like a charm! We fell in love with our Keurig the moment we got it. We have already gone through 2 of them, and we currently own the new Keurig 2.0. What we don’t like?
A Problem with the Keurig 2.0, and a Hack to Fix It!
Hmm, well, there’s just one thing wrong with the Keurig 2.0, really, but it’s pretty major. You know those plastic reusable k-cups that allow you to use your own coffee? Keurig hired a former US Mint engineer to design a special proprietary metallic ink that can not be duplicated. It’s been put on the new K-cups {the outer band of color with tiny pics of coffee cups}. The new machine actually reads this band. Without it, you get an ‘Oops’ message, indicating you are using a cup that is not compatible with your Keurig 2.0. Total bummer for those of us who prefer to use their favorite brand over the expensive K-cups.
Now, if there’s anything you should know about my husband, Mark, it’s that he’s always looking for ways to do things smarter, not harder, and, if he can’t get something to work, he comes up with ways to work around it. This K-cup issue is no exception. Between the two of us, we drink an average of 4-5 cups of coffee per day. When you consider that a box of 18 K-cups costs anywhere from $10.99-12.99, that’s over .65 cents per cup {$3.30 a day, $99 a month, $1200 a year}. Compare that to the coffee we by at our local large warehouse store at .15 cents per cup {.75 cents per day, $22.50 a month, $270 a year} and you’ve got a substantial difference. ***{Prices based on a bag of coffee that costs $14.99 and yields 101 / 8 ounce cups of coffee, at 5 cups per day}***
Ready for the Keurig 2.0 hack?
It’s so simple, you’re going to smack yourself in the head and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?!”
Here’s what you need:
Use the cardboard to help steady the knife and bring it level with the base of the top label of the K-cup. Slowly cut all the way around, separating it from the base.
