Homemade almond milk is chemical free and easier to make than you think! Just 2 ingredients!
When I first started using almond milk in smoothies and protein drinks, it didn’t occur to me that it could be anything other than healthy. Then I learned that some brands of almond milk have chemicals in them. I was shocked. I mean, everyone always talks about how much healthier it is for you, so who would have guessed it?
It really got me thinking about making my own, but I wasn’t sure how hard it would be. As it turns out, it isn’t hard at all. In fact, it’s just about the easiest thing in the world to make, aside from boiled water, that is.
Two ingredients, that’s it. Just almonds and water, and a little vanilla extract if you’re going to be drinking it plain or in cereal. I used my Vitamix, but any blender will do. Just be sure not to push it too hard, so you don’t end up burning up the motor.
Simply put the water and almonds in the blender pitcher and blend on high. My Vitamix only took 90 seconds, but a normal blender may take a bit longer. If you have a smoothie setting, use it.
Now, if you’re going to be using it in smoothies or a protein shake, you’re good to go. However, if you’re planning on using it for other things like cereal, coffee or drinking plain, you’re definitely going to want to strain it. I just took a little sieve I have and lined it with some cheesecloth. Next, I held it over the pitcher I planned to store it in and poured my homemade almond milk into the sieve and let filter through into the pitcher. The leftover gunk adds up quickly, so you’ll need to rinse the cheesecloth out about half way through straining. Mark is convinced I could have used the remains to make almond butter, but I’m pretty sure there’s a better way.
Straining the homemade almond milk won’t get all of the small particles out, but you could always strain it a second time if it really bothers you. Otherwise, your almond milk is ready to use!
Better yet, have you heard of a nut milk bag? It makes it super easy to strain the nut milk. This Pro Quality Nut Milk Bag – Bis big {12″X12″}, commercial grade, and reusable. It also includes free recipes & videos. I seriously wish I’d had this when I made my first batch of almond milk!
